McIlroy misses cut at Irish Open after even-par 2nd round (Yahoo Sports)

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy looks dejected after hitting his ball into the deep rough on the 18th hole during round two of the Irish Open Golf Championship at Royal County Down, Newcastle, Northern Ireland, Friday, May 29, 2015. (AP Photo/Peter Morrison)

Early exits are becoming a habit for Rory McIlroy, especially in his home country. The 26-year-old Northern Ireland native failed to make the Irish Open cut for the third straight year Friday, shooting an even-par 71 that failed to make up for an 80 in the opening round. England's Tyrrell Hatton showed the field at Royal County Down that the seaside links course, bedeviled with unseasonably frigid gales and pelting showers, could be tamed.

Stepping onto center court to take on 88th-ranked Damir Dzumhur, Roger Federer was on his guard. The 17-time Grand Slam champion had been caught cold at a previous French Open by a player ranked as low as the 23-year-old Bosnian, and he made sure that did not happen again. Federer advanced to the fourth round for the 11th straight year with a clinical 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win Friday.

The worst corruption crisis in soccer history stems from the governing body's decision to award Russia and Qatar the next two World Cup tournaments, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Friday. Blatter spoke at the FIFA congress hours before the presidential election in which he is a seeking a fifth term. In 2010, Russia was chosen to host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar was awarded the 2022 tournament amid widespread allegations of wrongdoing.

4:30 a.m. EDT) Germany's Justice Minister is quoted as saying FIFA's decision to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar can't stand if it turns out that votes were bought. Swiss authorities announced this week that they have opened a criminal probe into alleged wrongdoing by soccer officials during the 2010 vote for the hosting of those two World Cups. Justice Minister Heiko Maas told German daily Bild in an interview published Friday that ''the awarding of a World Cup shouldn't depend on who pays the highest bribes.'' Maas also said FIFA president Sepp Blatter is the wrong man to investigate alleged graft in his own organization.

Thursday's Sports In Brief (Yahoo Sports)

As defiant as ever, Sepp Blatter resisted calls to resign as FIFA president and deflected blame for the massive bribery and corruption scandal engulfing soccer's world governing body. ''We, or I, cannot monitor everyone all of the time,'' Blatter said in his first public remarks on the crisis that has further tainted his leadership on the eve of his bid for a fifth term as president. The 79-year-old Blatter insisted he could restore trust in world soccer after a pair of corruption investigations brought ''shame and humiliation'' on his organization and the world's most popular sport.

Pirates-Padres Preview (Yahoo Sports)

James Shields is off to one of the best starts of his 10-year career, but he still might have a hard time cooling off the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jung Ho Kang's first-inning, three-run homer was one of three hit by Pittsburgh (25-22), during Thursday's 11-5 rout of San Diego.

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is feeling better and is on track to return for the NBA Finals next week after taking a knee to his head from Trevor Ariza that caused ''concussion-like symptoms.'' That's according to Thompson's father, former NBA player Mychal Thompson. The Warriors initially said Thompson did not show any signs of a concussion and could've come back into the game.
